Elissa Stein Naves de Brito graduated in Film Direction from UNISINOS and completed her Master’s in Film Studies at the Free University of Berlin. As a film director, dancer, and researcher, her work explores the realm of sensory perception and its potential for artistic and social expression. In 2020, she completed the documentary 'Swimming in Color', an essay on the body and its memories, and has developed interdisciplinary projects that merge poetic languages, connecting cinema with gallery installations, performance, and site-specific practices. 'Light Up', her first fiction short film, received awards at the Mix Brasil, the Zsigmond Vilmos International Film Festival, and the Vierte Welle Film Festival.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Cinematographer and dear friend Alícia Peres invited me to direct KIÁLTÁS (Light Up) after a long pandemic lockdown in Germany, where I have now been based for twelve years. When Alícia called, spring was just beginning to announce itself, and I was emerging from a long winter - one marked not only by darkness, but by deep introspection. As she shared her ambitious and beautiful plan to produce a short film after months of hibernation, I immediately jumped in. The film offers a glimpse into the life of an immigrant in Europe, a story written by Alícia and Natália Pais, both former residents of Budapest, Hungary. The script captured the familiar, recurring cultural divergences I know as a Latina in northern Europe, having come from Brazil myself. The film explores the intimate dimensions of displacement: the fragile bond between two people from different cultures, navigating connection in the face of imminent departure and the sense of closure it brings. The day after we wrapped in Budapest, Hungary’s parliament passed a law restricting young people’s access to LGBTQI+ content, lending the film an unexpected new resonance. To understand love in its many forms, and above all, to be moved by its expressions, is an act of resistance. KIÁLTÁS (Light Up) is ours.
